Spain’s Badalona Dracs Add RB Louisiana Tech’s Hunter Lee

The top team in Spain, the Badalona Dracs from Barcelona, have signed running back Hunter Lee from Louisiana Tech.

The 24 year old Lee (5’10”, 198 lbs) had been out of American football for a couple of years after completing a four year career with the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs  (NCAA Division I FBS) which saw him elected team captain in his senior year. He ended his Bulldog career with 1,891 total yards of offense and 15 touchdowns. Since graduating with a degree in industrial engineering, Lee said that while being out of football, he was still keeping in shape. He put a profile up on Europlayers.com and Badalona head coach Oscar Calatayud contacted him.

The rest, as they say, is history.

After four seasons (2011-2014) with the Bulldogs, receiver Hunter Lee will leave in January to play professional football in Barcelona, Spain. Associated Press

AFI did a Q&A with the Dallas, Texas native to find out a little more about how he ended up back in football, and with Badalona.

American Football International: How did you end up getting noticed and signed by the Badalona Dracs?

Hunter Lee: I had made a profile on Europlayers.com, from there Coach Oscar Calatayud reached out me to see if I had any interest in playing in Spain. After a few more conversations I sent some highlight video and soon after committed to playing with the Dracs.

AFI: Where did you play in 2015 and 2016?

Lee: I didn’t play anywhere the 2015-2016 season. I trained with some old teammates at Louisiana Tech University, while doing Crossfit.

AFI: How much do you know about American football in Europe and in Spain?

Lee: I don’t know a whole lot. I’ve read articles and spoke with some athletes who have and are currently playing in Europe. It seems to be growing, which makes me excited to be a part of it.

AFI: The Dracs had a very successful year in 2016. What do you think you will bring to the team?

Lee: I’m looking to help the Dracs continue their success this upcoming year. Not only win a championship in Spain, but also to go beat another European team after. Hopefully in Germany. I think I can be a threat on offense and as a return man. Whatever the team needs me to do to help obtain our goals.

AFI: When do you arrive in Spain?

Lee: I will arrive at the beginning of January.

AFI: How is your Spanish?

Lee: No hablo espanol. I had to Google that, but I have Rosetta Stone to hopefully help me out.
