Brazilian Football League round of 16 produced major upset, defending champs knocked out

The Brazilian Football League has wound up its round of 16 and now eight teams head into the quarterfinals this weekend.

All but one of the number one seeds advanced as well as all of the number two seeds but there was a major upset.

The previously unbeaten and two-time defending champion Timbo Rex will not three peat. The T-Rex may have finished the regular season with a 6-0 record but the Coritiba Crocodiles at 3-3 had played them close in their only game and in the playoff game, pulled off the big upset. The Crocodiles edged the Rex 10-7  and will move on to face the Santa Maria Soldiers. The Soldiers defeated the Parana HP 9-0.

Joao Pessoa Espectros had no trouble in their game against the Salvador Cavalaria 2 de Julho whipping them 33-2. Espectros move on to play Ceara Cacadores who were 13-7 winners over the Recife Mariners.

The Sada Cruzeiro had an easy time of it against the Botafogo Reptiles beating them 33-6. This sets up an intriguing matchup in the quarterfinals against the Vila Velha Tritoes who downed the Patriotas FA 21-7 to avenge a loss to them in the first game of the regular season. Cruzeiro head coach Dan Levy is the former head coach of the Tritoes and a couple of his players moved over from the Tritoes to play for him.

The Cuiaba Arsenal also advanced to the next round after beating the Sinop Coyotes 40-12. They will face the Brasilia Tubaroes 32-13 winners over the Goiania Rednecks.

Schedule for this weekend:

Saturday October 21

Sunday October 22
