Week 7 in Mexico filled with playoff implications

With the playoffs looming in both the ONEFA  (Organización Nacional Estudiantil de Futbol Americano) and  CONADEIP (Comisión Nacional Deportiva Estudiantil de Instituciones Privadas, A.C. (private university league) every game is vital to each team’s playoff aspirations.

ONEFA

The week began on Friday with a lopsided game, as the Leones of the University Anahuac Cancun lost surprisingly to UAEM Potros 31-9, as the playoff picture begins to become clear.

On the same day but in Monterrey, the Tigres UANL humbled the Linces UVM by easily defeating them 44-7, making it very difficult for the Linces who are now a 2-4.

On Saturday the Pumas Acatlan visited the Frailes of the University of Tepeyac, a game that would also define a place in post season. The Pumas defeated the Frailes  30-18.


In Chapingo, the UACh Toros had a tough game but finally defeated the Leones of the Anahuac Queretaro 36-33.

In the duel that pitted the leaders of the red conference, Correcaminos UAT Victoria and the UV Halcones, the Tamaulipas took the best part and ended up winning 28-7, to seize first place.


The surprise team of this season has certainly been the UAMN Leones who have played like a big team in the ONEFA, and this weekend was no exception, as they defeated the IPN Burros 17-10, scoring with 15 seconds remaining.

In Guadalajara, the Tlahuicas de Morelos beat the Tecos UAG by the slightest difference 24-23, a surprise that the Tecos did not expect from a team already eliminated.

CONADEIP

On Friday in a good game, the Cimarrones of UABC Tijuana hosted the ITSON Potros putting up a valiant fight but finally lost 13-10.


On Saturday at the “Temple of Pain” in Puebla, the Borregos Mexico could not do much in the face of the powerful Azteca offense and were abused 48-13 by the UDLA.


Also in Puebla, but at the home of ITESM Puebla, the Monterrey defense picked off three passes on the way to beating the Borregos Puebla 38-10.

The best game of the Independence group, gave the Borregos Guadalajara and the Borregos Toluca, when engaging in a duel to death, in the end the Borregos Toluca made the best to take the home win 40-36 in a great offensive game.

In another great game, the CETYS Tijuana snapped an eight year drought as they beat the CETYS Méxicali 24-23 to stay in the hunt for the playoffs.


In a duel in which the Coyotes returned to fall at home, they were defeated by the Borregos Querétaro 38-6.
