Monterrey Fundidores open LFA season in Mexico with shutout

The Fundidores de Monterrey made their debut of the 2018 season of  Mexico’s Liga de Fútbol Americano Profesional (LFA),  with a shutout against 2017 LFA runners-up the Saltillo Dinos, 17-0.

The game was held in the new Estadio Nuevo León Unido in Monterrey.

The Fundidores took a 14-0 halftime lead behind touchdowns from quarterback Roberto Vega and running back Dezerick Reed. Manuel Alanis also kicked a 37 yard field goal in the third quarter.

Fundidores defensive back Sergio Cantú recorded his first of two interceptions on Luis Gómez Brull in the first half to help set up Reed’s touchdown.

Dinos quarterbacks Brull and  Jesús Mata Charles struggled throwing three interceptions between them while the Fundidores also recovered a fumble.

Next week, the Fundidores will visit the Mexicas in Mexico City, while the Dinos will play at home against the defending and two-time champions, the Mayas.
