Condors stun Mexicas to grab 1st win of season in Mexico

The Condors snapped a six game losing streak stretching back to 2017 and staged a dramatic fourth quarter comeback to earn their first win of 2018 by edging the Mexicas 23-22 in Mexico’s  Liga de Futbol Americano Profesional (LFA).

As a packed stadium looked on in Mexico City, the Condors fell behind 22-8 in the fourth quarter before waking up to score 15 unanswered points and come away with a much-needed victory.

Quarterback Diego Perez  threw for 209 yards and two touchdown passes while wide receiver Andres Salgado had 99 yards receiving and caught two touchdown passes. Preston Bailey had 31 yards receiving and a two-point conversion. Running back Luis López rushed for 23 yards and another touchdown plus a two-pointer as well.

The Condors took an early 8-0 lead with Pérez connecting with Salgado and Bailey adding the two-point conversion.

The Mexicas were not fazed and responded with a touchdown and two-point conversion of their own, tying the game at 8-8. Then Mexicas WR Guillermo Villalobos scored again to break the tie and give his team a 14-8 lead at the break.

Mexicas running back Terrill Gourdine added to the lead, breaking for a 50 yard touchdown and with the two-point conversion, the Mexicas held a commanding 22-8 lead late in the third quarter.

Perez then found Salgado again late in the quarter to narrow the lead to 22-15.

In the fourth, with both defenses playing outstanding football, Perez called his own number late in the quarter and scampered in from 36 yards out and Lopez added the crucial two-point conversion giving the Condors the all-important win.

Next up for the Condors (1-3) is the defending champion 3-1 Mayas. Meanwhile the Mexicas (2-2) will take on the Raptors who have lost two in a row.
