Spanish American Football League opens season with 6 games

Spain’s American Football League launches its 2019 schedule January 19/20 with a full slate of games

The Gijon Mariners take on Madrid’s Osos Rivas to open the season in Madrid. The two teams met twice in 2018 with Osos Rivas dominating the first game 48-0 and then defeating Gijon in the second 27-12.

The Granada Lions, who finished the 2018 season with a 1-6 record, will face one of the two new teams in the league this year, the Fuengirola Potros.

The surprise team of the 2018 season, the Mallorca Voltors will welcome the other new team in Spain’s top division, the Zaragoza Hurricanes, to Palma on the island of Mallorca. The Voltors reached the quarterfinals in 2018 where they were defeated by eventual finalists, the Murcia Cobras.

The Coslada Camioneros, who also reached the quarterfinals in 2018,  will play host to the Santiago Black Ravens. Coslada which finished with a 6-2 record last year, should handle a Back Ravens team that went winless in 2018.

The defending champions, the Badalona Dracs, who have dominated the Spanish league in recent years, will head to Valencia to face the Firebats, that last team to win the Spanish title before Badalona’s three year run. Valencia won the 2015 Spanish crown, beating the Dracs. Badalona has won 11 times including the past three. The two teams played each other once in 2018 with the Dracs prevailing.

Finally, in the only livestream game of the weekend in Spain, 2018 finalists, the Murcia Cobras will head to La Rozas to face the LG OLED Black Demons. The Cobras and Black Demons played each other only once in 2018, in the Spanish semifinals with Murcia coming out on top 35-28.
