Spanish American Football League heads into 4th weekend of action

Spain’s American Football League heads into the fourth weekend of its 2019 schedule with a full slate of games.

The 1-2 Gijon Mariners will be at home to the winless (0-3) Zaragoza Hurricanes on Saturday, February 23. The Mariners have dropped games to Madrid’s Osos Rivas (43-6)and the Coslada Camioneros (28-0) while beating the Santiago Black Ravens who have not won a game in two seasons in Spain’s top division. Meanwhile, the Hurricanes have not come close to their opening game performance when they pushed the Mallorca Voltors to the limit before succumbing 14-7. Since then they have lost badly to the Badalona Dracs (54-0) and the Valencia Firebats (27-0).

The Granada Lions (0-3) sit dead last in the 12 team Spanish American Football League and have not yet even scored a point in three games. After dropping a 13-0 decision to the Fuengirola Potros they proceeded to lose to the Murcia Cobras (48-0) and Las Rozas Black Demons (49-0) by lopsided scores. Unfortunately, this week’s game could finish in a similar fashion as they face Osos Rivas who are unbeaten and have only allowed six points in three games. Osos has downed the Mariners 43-6, Coslada Camioneros 34-0 and Santiago Black Ravens 46-0 and at this point in the season look to be one of the contenders for the Spanish crown.

The Badalona Dracs (3-0) will face the 2-1 Murcia Cobras in a rematch of the 2018 Spanish title game on Sunday, February 24. The Dracs have looked as impressive as usual with lopsided wins over the Valencia Firebats (46-12), Zaragoza Hurricanes (54-0) and Mallorca Voltors (48-7). They will face a Cobras team that has not looked as good as the 2018 edition with an opening game 41-6 loss to the Black Demons. They rebounded to defeat Granada 48-0 and Fuengirola Potros 41-0. Still, they will be hard pressed against the Badalona juggernaut.

The 2-1 Valencia Firebats will take on the Coslada Camioneros (2-1) in what looks like, on paper at least, the best game of the weekend. The Firebats struggled in their opening game suffering a 46-12 defeat at the hands of the mighty Badalona Dracs. However, went on to score two wins against the Mallorca Voltors (14-13) and the Zaragoza Hurricanes by a score of 27-0. The Camioneros had easy wins over the Mariners and lowly Black Ravens but were blanked by Osos Rivas 34-0. This one is a toss up.

The winless Santiago Black Ravens (0-3) take on the undefeated Las Rozas Black Demons (3-0) at home in Santiago. The outcome of this contest is pretty much a foregone conclusion. Santiago has lost to the Coslada Camioneros (47-0), Gijon Mariners (19-6) and Osos Rivas (46-0) and has not won a game in two years in the Spanish first division. Meanwhile, the Black Demons look like the 2018 semifinalists that they were with decisive victories over the Murcia Cobras (41-6), Fuengirola Potros (64-8) and Granada Lions, 49-0.

In the sixth game of the weekend, the 1-2 Mallorca Voltors head to Fuengirola to take on the Fuengirola Potros who also have a 1-2 record. The Potros, in their first season in the top league, opened the year with a 13-0 shutout of Granada but then lost two straight to the Black Demons (64-8) and Murcia Cobras 41-0. Mallorca eked out a 14-7 win over Zaragoza to start the season but then lost a tight game to Valencia 14-13 and were overwhelmed by Badalona 48-7. This game could go either way.
