Brian Caler new Head Coach for Germany’s Samsung Frankfurt Universe

The Frankfurt Universe did not have to look further than their own division, the German Football League South, to find their new head coach, choosing American Brian Caler, who coached division rivals the Allgäu Comets for the past nine years.

The 37 year old Caler, fashioned an outstanding record with the Comets after taking over as head coach in 2009. He guided them all the way from the lowest depths of football in the regional leagues to the German Bowl semifinals two years ago. His overall record with the Comets in the German Football League was 31-24. Prior to that he had coached Allgäu to back-to-back 12-2 seasons in the GFL2. He was released by the Comets in early September.

Needless to say, Caler was excited:

“This feels incredibly good! I am very excited to work with the ‘Men in Purple’. I am sure we will all have a great experience and that we will all be committed to reaching our team Goals.”

Caler, who originally came to Germany from the University of Saint Mary in Kansas as a quarterback  in 2004, now lives with his wife and children in Germany. He speaks fluent German, was the first choice for the Universe according to Frankfurt president Michael Schwarzer:

“He was our absolute favorite candidate. Brian has a great reputation in both the GFL and the players and officials. Likewise, Brian wants to get involved in the younger generation and also help at this point and set new impulses. I think he’s a win not only for our team, but for the whole club as well! “

Caler does not face an easy task however. The job brings with it a pressure to win right away. The Universe reached the German semifinals in 2017 with a 12-2 regular season record and came within a hair of reaching the German Bowl losing 23-21 to the Braunschweig New Yorker Lions. In other words, his team is among the elite in Germany now. With a sponsor like Samsung, the expectations and pressure will be ratcheted up in 2018.

Caler is aware of the task in front of him and looks forward to the challenge:

“American football has many features that are transferred from sports to life That’s why it’s the best sport in the world for me. I attach great importance to the family feeling, which is very strong in football between fans and team. Honesty and the respectful interaction with each other are extremely important components of a collaboration for me. I’m looking forward to the exciting project in Frankfurt. I want to prepare the team perfectly, to always get the boys in the position to win the game. I cannot wait to meet the team, the staff and of course the fans. Of course my family also plays an important role and I always try to be the best possible husband and father.”
