LIVESTREAM: Germany – Allgäu Comets @Frankfurt Universe, Sunday, Sept. 9, 3p (9a ET)

The 11-2 Frankfurt Universe will take on the 8-5 Allgäu Comets in the  German Football League regular season  finale for both teams, Sunday, September 9 at PSD Bank Arena in Frankfurt, Germany.

Frankfurt overwhelmed the Comets 66-7 in the final game before the four-week break in July precipitating the coaching upheaval which saw the entire coaching staff resign.

Since then, Allgäu has won three of their last four games and clinched a playoff berth.

Frankfurt has been on a roll for the past month winning four in a row. Quarterback Andrew Ellfers has been behind center now for six wins including back-to-back wins against the Wildcats and the gritty 26-19 win over the Marburg Mercenaries three weeks ago.  The week before, Ellfers and the Universe suffered a tough loss to the Schwabisch Hall Unicorns.  Ellfers has thrown for 1,934 yards and 20 touchdowns in eight games. Despite the loss of David Giron for the last four games, he has had a corps of outstanding receivers including Tim Thomas. Thomas has caught 83 passes for 1,144 yards and 12 touchdowns. David Merkl has stepped up in the last couple of games with 82 yards receiving. Running back Anreas Betza, the French national team running back, has rushed for 728 yards and 12 touchdowns so far in 2018. Joe Bergeron has also returned and together with Justin Rodney gives Frankfurt a potent backfield.

Comets QB Justin Sottilare is the overall German Football League passing leader with 3,939 yards and 41 TDs although against Munich last week he had a mere 22 yards passing and he only had 88 yards passing in a loss to the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns three weeks ago. Sottilare has set a record for passing attempts in a game (84 against the Dukes), and still leads the GFL in average yards per game with 303. His receiving corps of Jordan Paul (3rd, 1,198 yds) , Martin Emos (8th, 921 yds),and Féli Manoka (845 yds) are among the top 15 in Germany. Jonatan Gihl has been converted to running back and is performing well with 124 yards in last week’s key win over Munich.

Although the outcome of this game will not alter the standings, both teams need to prepare for the playoffs so a loss could be costly.
