LIVESTREAM: Germany – Munich Cowboys @Frankfurt Universe, July 28, 7p (11a EST)

The Frankfurt Universe will try to improve to 7-1 Saturday, July 28 at PSD Bank Arena in Frankfurt, Germany when they play host to the 2-6 Munich Cowboys in the lone game in the German Football League.

Frankfurt did not have an easy time of it in the opening game of the season when they defeated the Cowboys 17-0. Since then they have won all but one game, losing to the the league leading Schwabisch Hall Unicorns. In their last game before the break, they thrashed the Allgau Comets 66-7, flexing their offensive muscles.

The Cowboys record is misleading and they have been playing much improved football in recent weeks winning two of their last three games while suffering a tough 13-12 loss to the Kirchdorf Wildcats last week on a last second field goal.

The dilemma for Munich is that they are facing the fourth best offense in the GFL and the second-leading defense. Frankfurt is averaging 37 points a game while giving up 10.1. The Cowboys are 12th in offense among the 16 teams scoring almost 18 points a game, and 13th on defense allowing 31.2. However, in the last three games, they have improved scoring 23.6 points a game and surrendering 21.3. Not a vast improvement, but definitely better.

The question is, can they continue that trend in this game?

Munich quarterback Trenton Miller is averaging 256.5 yards passing per game, third best among all quarterbacks. However, the Cowboys running game is anemic averaging 35 yards a game. In the loss to Kirchdorf, as a team Munich rushed for -37 yards. Miller had just 145 yards passing and was sacked five times. In other words, the offensive line needs to improve against a Frankfurt defense that gives up only 168.6 yards total offense a game, tops in the GFL.

In the huge lopsided win over the Allgau Comets, new Frankfurt quarterback Andrew Ellfers threw for 254 yards and six touchdowns with wide receiver David Giron as his favorite target. Giron caught 13 passes for 147 of those yards and three touchdowns. Tim Thomas also scored three touchdowns on four receptions for 80 yards. New running back Justin Rodney had 24 carries for 140 yards and two touchdowns in his debut with Frankfurt.

Can Munich buck the trend and shock the Universe or will Frankfurt continue to roll?
