LIVESTREAM: Iceland – Cologne Falcons @Reykjavik Einherjar, Saturday, October 27, 7p (9p CET, 3p ET)

The Reykjavik Einherjar from Iceland will face another tough opponent Saturday, October 27 in Kópavogur, Iceland when they face the Cologne Falcons who play in the third German division.

The  Einherjar’s reputation has been growing steadily over the past three years, making  it a little easier to find games. Nevertheless, they continue to search and they are still  the only football team in Iceland.  And being an island nation with a population of only 300,000, located 1,200 miles north of London, England, Iceland is still as remote as it gets in terms of American football. So the Einherjar spend most of the year practicing, while they troll the international American football community for games.

This has not deterred the Einherjar though. In the past two years the team has hosted teams from Sweden, Austria, Norway, Germany and Great Britain, winning five games and losing three.  They lost to the Carinthian Lions from Austria just over a month ago in a tight game, 19-14. They traveled to Mallorca in late October last year to play the Spanish first division team the Mallorca Voltors. Reykjavík won the game, 21-14.

In their last game, Reykjavik played host to the Uppsala 86ers, Swedish semifinalists, and defeated them 39-27 behind an outstanding performance by quarterback Bergþór Phillip Pálsson. Pálsson threw for 220 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for another 60 and two touchdowns.

The Einherjar have added to their roster with the addition of offensive/defensive lineman Tim McGee (University of Memphis). The 6’5″, 310 lb, 33 year old McGee is a veteran of football in Europe and South America and has played in Germany (Kirchdorf Wildcats), Poland (Gdynia Seahawks), Turkey (ITU Hornets). Brazil (Empyreo Leme Lizards) and Hungary (Fehérvár Enthroners).

Reykjavik Einherjar roster

The Cologne Falcons arrive with a 37 man roster. The Falcons play in Germany’s third division, Region West and they finished the 2018 season with a 7-4 record. While Cologne does not have an explosive offense, averaging 19 points a game, they only gave up a league-best 14 points a game.
