Mexico: Two Huge Rematches In LFA’s 5th week

Four of the six teams in Mexico’s only professional American football league —Liga de Fútbol Americano Profesional (LFA)— are in action this weekend.

The Eagles take on the Mayas in a battle for first place in the Suerox division while the Fundidores face the Raptors in the Under Armour division.

Eagles – Mayas

The first battle between the Eagles and Mayas opened their second season in the LFA. In a surprising result, the Eagles defeated the reigning league champions 33-21 in Jesús ‘Palillo’ Martínez stadium. After that match, the Mayas achieved three victories against the Condors, Dinos and Raptors, while Eagles defeated the Dinos and Fundidores but lost to Condors in week three.

Raúl Mateos has been a very important player for Eagles. He has played as a quarterback, running back, wide receiver and on defense as corner or linebacker. Although he has demonstrated its ability in the field, Mateos needs to settle in a certain position if he wants to continue playing in a good level due to his age and week to week performance.

On the other side, the Mayas’ bounced back from their opening round defeat at the hands of the Eagles in week one by downing the Condors by 64 points in the next game. After that, they confirmed why they won the championship last year and demonstrated that they have one of the most interesting rosters of the league. Names like Marco García, Mauricio López, David Aceves, Aaron Williams and Ramiro Pruneda stand out for their team.

Fundidores – Raptors

The other second round game will also take place at ‘Palillo’ Martínez stadium following the Mayas-Eagles game. Fundidores (Monterrey) will travel to Mexico City again after last week’s game against the Condors, but now the rival will be the Raptors. The Fundidores are in need of a victory if they want to keep their postseason aspirations alive.

In week three, the Raptors took their first trip outside the center of the country in order to play against the Fundidores in Monterrey. The match was very close and almost went into overtime, but the Fundidores were able to win the game and achieve their first – and only – victory of the campaign.

The Raptors started the season with two victories, one against the Condors and the other against the Dinos., Raptors quarterback Bruno Márquez , improved from the first game and has been a key element for the green and white squad. Unfortunately, the defense lowered their game in the last two matches and gave their rivals (Fundidores and Mayas) the opportunity to defeat them.
