Murcia Cobras, Las Rozas Black Demons stay unbeaten in Spanish League

The Murcia Cobras and Las Rozas Black Demons both kept their unbeaten records intact last weekend in the fifth week of play in Spanish American Football League while the Mallorca Voltors surprised the Valencia Firebats in Group A action.

The Voltors, who had lost to Valencia by a score of 18-0 in the opening weekend of the season, stunned the visiting Firebats by taking a 19-0 lead into the fourth quarter. But Valencia mounted a furious comeback overtaking the Voltors 20-19 midway through the final period. However, quarterback Barry Craig Coffman, who had already thrown for two touchdowns and scored another on his own, caught an option pass from Henri Laine to seal the win.

Valencia quarterback Alexander Mckean scored a rushing touchdown as did Kris Wedderburn and Nayim Mohamed.

Group A standings with a month left in the regular season

The Murcia Cobras (5-0) who lead Group B, won their fifth straight game, blanking the Alicante Sharks 34-0 behind three touchdown passes from quarterback Jordan Perry to wide receiver Cory Holmes. Running back José Antonio Sotomayor scored the other two touchdowns for Murcia.

In the only other Group B game, the Coslada Camioneros whipped the Granada Lions 44-0.

The Black Demons also earned a shutout victory in Group C play trouncing the Santiago Black Ravens 49-0. Las Rozas took a 19-0 halftime lead as quarterback Jason Gaines tossed touchdown passes to Sergio Condés (2) and Timothy Crenshaw.  After the break, Jesús Pérez extended the visitor’s advantage with a another touchdown and Marcos de la Mata added the two point conversion for a 27-0 lead. De la Mata scored his second touchdown to increase the lead to 33-0. Ignacio Ortiz and Federico Rodrigo Martinez scored fourth quarter touchdowns with Gaines and Ricardo Sanchez adding the two point conversions.

Gijon Mariners upended the Santurtzi Coyotes in the mud

In another Group C game, the Gijón Mariners downed the Santurtzi Coyotes 27-20 to keep their playoff hopes alive.

The defending champion Badalona Dracs (3-0) were idle this past weekend but return to action in Group A when they host the Mallorca Voltors this Sunday, March 11.

Overall standings in Spain. The final weekend of the regular season is April 14/15.
