Former Packer Charles Clay Signs With Germany’s Saarland Hurricanes

The Saarland Hurricanes of the German Football League, have signed free safety Charles Clay for the 2017 season.

The Hurricanes finished the 2016 season with a 8-6 record and advanced to the German quarterfinals where they were eliminated by the Dresden Monarchs. It was their second appearance in the playoffs since returning to the German Football League in 2011.

Clay, 5’11”, 215 lb, a graduate of the University of Hawaii, lasted through to the end of the preseason with the Green Bay Packers in 2015 and caught on with the Ottawa Redblacks of the Canadian Football League.  After being released in the spring of 2016, he was signed by the Hamilton Tiger Cats of the CFL where he impressed the coaching staff.

According to Jeff Reinebold, special teams coordinator and linebackers coach for Hamilton, Saarland has lucked out:

“This is a great signing for Saarland!”

With his 4.4 speed, the versatile Clay will give the Hurricanes added power in the secondary as well as on special teams and offense. The Hurricane coaching staff intend to get the ball into Clay’s hands at every opportunity, as a receiver and returner.

Assistant offensive coordinator Cory Goodman:

“We have a good core of veterans returning this season. The addition of Charles Clay and his experience will elevate the entire receiving corps, and offense as a whole.”
