The East City Giants (2-5) picked up an important road win in the Finnish Maple League on Saturday, defeating the Wasa Royals (2-3) 28-16 in Vaasa. Behind a productive passing game from Norman Douglas Jr. and a huge afternoon from Oskari Suoniemi, the Giants built an early lead and held off a late rally to earn their second victory of the season while handing the Royals a third consecutive defeat.
Giants strike through the air
The Giants wasted little time establishing control, leaning on an aerial attack that consistently stretched the Royals defense.
Quarterback Norman Douglas Jr. continued to settle into the offense, completing 18 of 35 passes for 264 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions. His mobility helped him escape pressure throughout the afternoon, allowing him to extend plays and avoid several potential sacks.
Douglas Jr. repeatedly connected with Oskari Suoniemi, who turned in one of the best receiving performances of the season. Suoniemi hauled in eight receptions for 157 yards and three touchdowns to earn Pohjola Insurance Most Convincing Player of the Match honors. Austin Brock added the Giants’ other touchdown reception as the visitors controlled the game through the air.
Royals battle through adversity
The Royals suffered a major setback in the first half when quarterback Alexander Abbott, making his return from an ankle injury, was forced to leave the game after being injured again.
That sent Andrew McElroy back under center after originally being brought in as a receiver, forcing the Royals to adjust their offensive approach once again.
Wasa didn’t reach the end zone until the fourth quarter, but continued to battle despite the difficult circumstances. Anthony Henriquez Jr. scored on a rushing touchdown, while Rory Kelly returned an interception 37 yards for another score to bring the home team closer before time ran out.
Playoff race tightens
For the Royals, inconsistency on offense and another injury at quarterback made an already difficult afternoon even more challenging. The loss drops Wasa to 2-3 and leaves little room for error with a demanding stretch of games still ahead.
The victory gives the Giants momentum after another encouraging performance from Douglas Jr., whose chemistry with Suoniemi continues to grow with each passing week.
With four touchdown passes, another explosive outing from Suoniemi and a defense that made key plays when needed, the East City Giants left Vaasa with a valuable road victory and renewed confidence heading into the final weeks of the regular season.
