LIVESTREAM: IFAF Women’s EC – Great Britain v. Austria, Wed. Aug. 14, 7p GMT (8p CEDT, 2p EDT)

The host nation, Great Britain will be looking to redeem themselves after an opening day narrow loss to Sweden when they take on Team Austria Wednesday, August 14 as the IFAF 2019 Women’s European Championships continue at John Charles Stadium in Leeds, England.

Great Britain lost 9-6 to Sweden in a game that was as close as the score suggests. The British squad reached Sweden’s two yard line with seconds to go but a late interception ended the game. Austria meanwhile, were overwhelmed by the defending European champions, Team Finland, losing 50-0.

Team Great Britain’s running game was on full display against the Swedes so expect the same against Austria. Running back  Ruth Matta rushed for 207 yards against the Swedes, scoring the only touchdown for Britain. For Austria, who gave up 398 yards rushing against Finland, this does not bode well.

Matta’s speed and mobility makes her tough to bring down. She could have a field day against the Austrian front seven unless they can adjust after a horrendous first outing against Finland. British quarterback Sydney Green was oh so close to scoring the winning touchdown herself against Sweden and can be a difference maker. She picks her spots well even though she would probably like to take back her final pass attempt as it was picked off to end the game.

The Austrian offense managed to generate just 81 yards in total, 46 on the ground. Quarterback Cornelia Pripfl was a bright spot though and running back Lisa Putz battled all game.

Still, this looks like a comfortable win for the host nation. If Finland beats Sweden, then Great Britain could be playing for the gold medal on the final day of the tournament.
