Prague Black Panthers secure playoff berth in thrilling win over Telfs Patriots

In a high-stakes battle in the Austrian Football League, the Prague Black Panthers took down the Telfs Patriots in a 31-27 thriller that had huge playoff implications.

After Prague took a 24-6 lead into halftime, it looked like the team would secure an easy victory at home to strengthen their playoff push. But Telfs quickly stormed back, scoring 21 consecutive points to take a 27-24 lead late in the fourth quarter. The Black Panthers responded when it mattered most, scoring a touchdown with under a minute left to clinch the game.

Despite starting quarterback Javarian Smith being unable to play due to injury, the Prague passing attack under veteran Ryan Sample was still potent all game long, recording over 302 yards through the air. Three Prague receivers had big days with Canadian Ben von Jagow leading the way with seven catches for 112 yards and one touchdown. Jakub Wolesky had six receptions for 65 yards and a score while Jan Stiegler hauled in seven passes for 84 yards and another touchdown.

Von Jagow made the play of the game, streaking down the sideline and catching a 32-yard pass for a touchdown with 34 seconds left to put the Black Panthers on top for good. Prague’s defense was a tale of two halves, shutting down the Patriots in the first half but giving up 21 points in the second. However, they prevented the Patriots from scoring one
final touchdown after von Jagow’s late score.

Telfs quarterback Aaron Ellis played well in the loss, completing 22 of 34 passes for 330 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. Receiver Ravon Johnson was practically unstoppable, catching 11 passes for 197 yards and two touchdowns, while Theodor Landstrom chipped in with six catches for 74 yards. Hugo Dyrendahl’s rushing touchdown gave them the lead with just under two minutes left, but it was not enough to secure a win.

As both teams were 5-2 entering the game, Prague’s win gave their playoff chances a big boost, vaulting them into a tie for second place in the league. Telfs still holds on to the last playoff spot at 5-3, but with two games left, they need to finish strong with both the Znojmo Knights and Mödling Rangers hot on their heels.
