Can Unicorns RB Mikey Alfieri get more room to work in the German Bowl?

The Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns one-sided 33-8 victory over the Allgäu Comets in the German Football League semifinals was a dominant performance from the whole team. However, one name that ended up towards the bottom of the stat sheet was running back Mikey Alfieri.

The usage of Alfieri was not due to performance or injury, but simply chalked up to situational gameplan splits between Schwäbisch Hall’s other running backs Maurice Schule, Lars Kozlowski, and Mike Gentili.

Alfieri only rushed for 12 yards off of four carries. Quarterback Reilly Hennessey took over his carries in the red zone scoring two touchdowns with a 16-yard scramble and a one-yard sneak at the goal line.

On the bright side, Alfieri wasn’t completely left out of the endzone as he was able to catch a pass and take it in for an 18-yard score. This would give him the bulk of his 26 yards off of three receptions for the game.

This was a departure from the regular season as in nine games the 6-foot, 195 pound back rushed for 616 yards and nine touchdowns, with an average of 68.4 yards per game. Alfieri has also contributed in the pass game with 156 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

Before joining the Unicorns in 2022, Mikey spent his college career playing for the Oregon State Beavers. While he primarily was a special teams player at the PAC-12 school, he has showcased his running ability well in his first year in the GFL.

Apart from the last matchup against Allgäu, Alfieri has proven to be very useful in the Unicorns‘ offensive scheme. In the quarterfinal matchup against the Berlin Adler, Mikey had himself a day rushing for 129 yards and two touchdowns with 32 receiving yards off two receptions as well.

After an unusual semifinal performance, it would seem that Schwäbisch Hall will get their lead running back as involved as possible in their title game against the Potsdam Royals.
