Mexico: Galgos de Tijuana sign former Seattle Seahawks QB Trevone Boykin

The Galgos de Tijuana of Mexico’s Liga de Fútbol Americano Profesional, LFA, have signed former Seattle Seahawks quarterback Trevone Boykin for the 2023 season.

The 6’0″, 213-pound native of Mesquite, Texas is entering his first year in Mexico, with the goal of turning around the Galgos organization’s fortunes. Tijuana finished their first season as a franchise last year with a 0-6 record, being the only team to miss the playoffs and the first ever team in league history to be winless.

Boykin was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Seattle Seahawks in 2016 and stayed with Seattle for two years as a backup to Russell Wilson. He saw very limited playing time appearing in five games.

He had played at Texas Christian University from 2011 to 2015 (NCAA Div. I) where he threw for 10,727 yards and 86 touchdowns. He would also be effective in the run game; rushing for 2,049 rushing yards and 27 touchdowns for his career. In 2014, he was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year and won the Kellen Moore Award. Boykin would then be Second-team All-American in his senior season in 2015.

Despite his talent on the field, his football career both collegiately and professionally has been overshadowed by his numerous legal troubles. On December 31, 2015, two days prior to the 2016 Alamo Bowl, he was arrested in San Antonio, Texas after a bar fight in which he was charged with assaulting a public servant, a third degree felony and was also charged with public intoxication and resisting arrest. He was sentenced to a year of probation, a $1,500 fine and was ordered to attend alcohol awareness sessions and anger management sessions and 80 hours of community service.

His issues continued to follow him when he entered the NFL, as on March 27, 2017, Boykin was arrested in Dallas, Texas for misdemeanor charges of possession of marijuana and public intoxication. Nearly two weeks later on April 6, he was later arrested for a possible violation of his probation.

Exactly one year later on March 27, 2018, a report was made that Boykin broke his girlfriend’s jaw during an altercation that occurred the previous week. Subsequently, he was released by the Seahawks. Following several bond violations and other charges in the next two years, Boykin was sentenced to three years in prison for the assault after pleading guilty to that and witness tampering.

Now out early, with his shady past behind him, Boykin is ready for a comeback, with the hope that he can turn the woeful Galgos into a playoff team.
