Aaron Cruickshank’s record run in Madrid earns him Battlehawks deal

After a record-shattering season with the Madrid Bravos, wide receiver and return specialist Aaron Cruickshank has signed with the St. Louis Battlehawks of the United Football League. The dynamic playmaker dominated the 2025 European League of Football campaign, earning himself another opportunity back in the United States with a franchise that reached the UFL semifinals last season.

Record-breaking year abroad
Cruickshank achieved the extremely rare receiver triple crown during his time in Madrid, leading the entire ELF in receptions (122), receiving yards (1,729), and receiving touchdowns (20). His remarkable performance broke league records in all three categories, establishing him as the most dominant offensive weapon in European professional football. His explosive playmaking ability and consistent production made him must-watch television throughout the season.

Proven return skills
Beyond his receiving prowess, Cruickshank brings legitimate special teams value to the Battlehawks. During his collegiate career at Rutgers University, he established himself as one of the nation’s top return specialists, racking up 2,564 return yards and four touchdowns. His 2020 season was particularly spectacular when he led the Big Ten with 671 return yards and two touchdowns, earning Return Specialist of the Year honors and First Team All-Conference recognition.

Return to stateside competition
The 25-year-old Brooklyn native previously spent time with the Chicago Bears and Pittsburgh Steelers during NFL training camps after going undrafted out of Rutgers. His outstanding ELF performance has now earned him another stateside opportunity with a St. Louis team that reached the UFL playoffs last season. Cruickshank’s signing demonstrates how European leagues can serve as legitimate development pathways for players seeking to continue their professional careers in American football’s competitive landscape.
