Barcelona Dragons looking to regain winning edge in matchup against Cologne Centurions

The 6-2 Barcelona Dragons will take on the 2-6 Cologne Centurions on the road in a Southern Conference battle Saturday, August 13 in the European League of Football with less than a month left in the 2022 season.

Barcelona started their season winning their first five games but have slipped up a little in the last few weeks. They then lost two in a row, first succumbing to the Vienna Vikings 27-20 and the following week dropping a squeaker, 22-19, to the lowly Istanbul Rams. However, they got back on the right track in their last game at home against the Rhein Fire, winning by a score of 33-23. The game was much closer than the score appeared, as the Dragons’ lead was boosted by a fumble return for a touchdown with about two minutes left on the clock. Though the defense held the Fire to a respectable 23 points, they looked pretty shaky for the most part, allowing 441 total yards of total offense. However, they made the two biggest plays of the game: the fumble return for a touchdown, and a 97 yard interception return for a touchdown by Niko Lester which came in the dying seconds of the first half. It was a relieving victory for the Dragons, who are looking to use that game as a start of a new winning streak.

Check out highlights from the first meeting between the two teams this year.

After starting their season by winning their first two games, the Centurions have been in complete free fall since then, as they have lost six games in a row. Their first loss of the season
came back on June 18th against these Dragons in a 34-32 nailbiter. While that game was a close contest, each of their five losses since that point have been by double digits. In the last meeting with the Dragons, Cologne’s passing offense was nearly unstoppable, as quarterback Jan Weinreich completed 36 of 53 passes for 442 yards and four touchdowns.

However, the defense could not stop Barcelona’s offense, which ultimately led to their downfall. As their season has been a disappointment to the losing streak, the Centurions will try to regroup in this matchup to get a win over a team they have held their own against in the past. Barcelona, on the other hand, is looking to prove that they are among the league’s best as the end of the season approaches.
