Germany’s Frankfurt Universe trounce Milano Seamen in Big6

The Frankfurt Universe overwhelmed the visiting Milano Seamen Sunday 38-12 in front of a packed home crowd of 5,000 to win their first game in the Big6 tournament.

The Seamen had beaten the Berlin Rebels, the third team in the group, 14-13 two weeks ago.

Frankfurt will now play Berlin to basically decide who advances to the Eurobowl final against the New Yorker Lions.

The tale of the game can be told in the rushing stats. The Universe racked up 202 yards rushing to Milano’s 15. The Seamen could not mount a rushing attack. Meanwhile, Frankfurt running back Silas Nacita gained 106 yards of it while his counterpart Sean Richards carried the ball 10 times for 66 yards and another touchdown. Quarterback Mike Wegzyn completed 15 of 20 passes for 166 yards and three touchdowns.

Milano quarterback Luke Zahradka threw for 187 yards and two touchdowns.

The game was almost over before it really got started. Nacita scored on a 53 yard scamper within the first two minutes of the game and the Seamen never seemed to recover. Jones fumbled on the very next play from scrimmage and Frankfurt took advantage scoring on their next play and after two minutes and 12 seconds the Seamen were behind 14-0.

Many Frankfurt fans were still finding their way to their seats.

The Seamen got nowhere on their next possession so Wegzyn went back to work and four plays later threw a 42 yard touchdown pass to David Giron making the score 21-0. Milano finally got on the board with two minutes left in the half when Zahradka connected with Reece Horn for a 43 yard touchdown. But the Universe added a field goal for good measure with no time left giving Frankfurt a comfortable 24-6 lead.

The third quarter produced more of the same with Milano unable to get a single first down and the Universe mounting another long drive with Richard finally carrying the ball in from 15 yards out to extend the lead to 31-6.

The Seamen finally countered as Zahradka marched his team on a nine play, 73 yard, five minute drive capping it with a two-yard touchdown pass to Paul Morant. The PAT was again no good but at least the lead was now 31-12.

That was the last time however that Milano’s offense would touch the ball other than to take a knee. Frankfurt went on a brilliant 14 play drive which ate up exactly eight minutes and five seconds, and which culminated in a Wegzyn to Giron three yard touchdown pass to wind up the scoring.

The Universe will now play the Berlin Rebels in Berlin this Saturday, May 13, to basically decide who faces Braunschweig in the final. Milano has a mathematical chance though. If Frankfurt wins they are through. If Berlin beats Frankfurt then all three teams are tied and the points differential is taken into account. Right now Milano is -25, Frankfurt is +26 and Berlin -1.
