The ITESM Borregos of Monterrey fell behind in the first half but found a way to come back in the second half to defeat the defending champion UDLAP Aztecas 33-23 to win the 2015 CONADEIP championship in Mexico in front of a crowd of 12,000.
With the win the Borregos claimed their 11th title since 2000 and their first since 2012. Head coach Frank Gonzalez now has 14 championships to his name.
This was a tale of two games as the Aztecas had control of the first half and also the luck as quarterback Norman Contla found Eduardo Retana for a 55 yard pass. Retana fumbled but teammate Diego Yanez recovered the ball at the Borregos 15 yard line and carried the ball in for the score giving UDLAP a 10-7 lead. Then Contla tossed a six yard touchdown pass to Humberto Noriega and the Aztecas held a comfortable 17-7 lead at the half.
The lead changed hands three times in the second half as the Borregos clawed their way back into the game. Contla struggled in the second half although he found receiver Eduardo Retana for a seven yard touchdown pass in the third to regain the lead 23-18 after the Borregos had jumped up to an 18-17 lead.
But the fourth quarter belonged to ITESM as Borregos quarterback Miguel Chen found Leonardo Magallanes for a 40 yard touchdown and then Diego Betancourt took off for 60 yards to give ITESM 26-23 lead. Betancourt scored the final touchdown of the game from seven yards out with a minute left to give the Borregos the victory 33-23.
