The Braunschweig Lions (3-5) continued their midseason turnaround Sunday, defeating the Saarland Hurricanes (1-6) 50-17 at Eintracht Stadium to earn their third straight win and first home victory of the German Football League season.
After falling behind early, the Lions seized control with a dominant second quarter and never looked back. Ryon Thomas accounted for four touchdowns, the defense forced three takeaways, and special teams delivered a game-changing kickoff return as Braunschweig continued its climb up the North Division standings.
Slow start disappears
The opening minutes belonged to the visitors.
After forcing an early punt, Saarland put together a balanced drive behind Gabriel Cunningham and Joshua Youngblood before Antonio Buhrfiend capped it with a 30-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead.
That advantage didn’t last long.
Thomas settled the Braunschweig offense, mixing runs with completions to Leon Kusterer and Jonathan ter Horst before finding ter Horst from 23 yards out to put the Lions ahead 7-3 late in the first quarter.
Second quarter changes everything
The game turned in a hurry.
Thomas stretched the lead with a 23-yard touchdown scamper before the Hurricanes threatened to answer. Instead, Brandon Potts stepped in front of a Cunningham pass for an interception, giving the offense another short field.
Thomas wasted little time, hitting ter Horst again for a 21-yard score to make it 20-3.

Things only got worse for Saarland moments later. Joshua Youngblood lost a fumble that Mark-Robin Peschelt recovered, and Thomas quickly capitalized with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Peter Anderson.
Youngblood finally gave the Hurricanes something to celebrate, punching the ball in from nine yards out to trim the deficit to 27-10.
Any momentum disappeared on the ensuing kickoff.
Potts fielded the ball at his own 11-yard line and raced 89 yards untouched to the end zone, igniting the home crowd. Before halftime, Thomas added his second rushing touchdown to send Braunschweig into the locker room comfortably ahead, 41-10.
Lions stay in command
There was no comeback after halftime.
Peschelt extended the lead with a 42-yard field goal before Youngblood scored his second rushing touchdown of the afternoon to make it 44-17.
That proved to be the final points for the Hurricanes.
The Lions controlled the final quarter behind Richard Jung and the running game, chewing up valuable clock while keeping the ball away from Saarland’s offense. Peschelt added field goals from 27 and 24 yards to complete the scoring, and Leon Hockauf ended the visitors’ final possession with an interception.
Momentum continues
Thomas once again set the tone for the Braunschweig offense, throwing three touchdown passes to Jonathan ter Horst and Peter Anderson while adding two rushing scores of his own. Ter Horst finished with a pair of touchdown receptions, while Potts played a major role on both sides of the ball with an interception and an electrifying kickoff return touchdown.
For Saarland, Youngblood remained the biggest offensive threat, accounting for the team’s two touchdowns after helping set up the game’s opening score.
The victory sends the Braunschweig Lions into the summer break riding their longest winning streak of the season, while the Saarland Hurricanes continue searching for answers after dropping their sixth game in seven outings.
