Brazil: Recife Mariners down Potiguares Bulls, advance to playoffs

The Recife Mariners improved their record to 4-1 and earned a playoff berth in Brazil’s BFA Northeast Conference after beating the Potiguares Bulls 26-6 Sunday in Recife.

Recife quarterback Alex “A Train” Allen threw for 148 yards and ran for another 42 and two touchdowns to pace the Mariners. Running back Lucas Adolfo was a powerhouse rushing fro 156 yards on 20 carries and scoring another touchdown. Rafael Bandeira kicked both extra-points and a field goal. The Mariner’s defense contributed to the scoring by forcing a safety.

The Bulls lone touchdown came from the legs of Matheus Muniz .

Allen scored in the first and third quarters and the Mariners built a 17-0 lead heading into the final period. The Bull’s pulled closer with Muniz scoring from a yard out narrowing the gap to 17-6. But Muniz was picked off on a option pass play and Adolfo scored two plays later to extend the lead to 24-6.

The Mariners defense did the rest.

Next up for Recife is the unbeaten Joao Pessoa Espectros this weekend in the final game of the regular season for both teams.
