Calanda Broncos advance to 10th straight Swiss Bowl

For the 10th year in a row, the Calanda Broncos have advanced the the Swiss Bowl after they defeated the Winterthur Warriors in the semifinals in Switzerland, 49-15.

And for the sixth time since 2010 they will be facing and old foe, the Basel Gladiators.

Calanda jumped out to a 35-0 halftime lead and then cruised in the second half for the win as Winterthur scored two fourth quarter touchdowns.

Broncos quarterback Clark Evans was superb throwing for two touchdowns on six of eight passing and rushing for 100 yards and three more himself.  Leon Fehr and Adrian Sünderhauf each caught touchdown passes while Sünderhauf and Nate Fellberius each rushed for one. Erik Rageth kicked seven extra points.

Winterthur quarterback Holt Claiborne completed 21 of 32 passes for 197 yards and one touchdown and rushed for 57 yards and another to account for the Warriors scoring. Receiver Bastian Stocker was Claiborne’s favorite target with 10 receptions for 115 yards and one touchdown.

With the Broncos leading 21-0 late in the second quarter, Sünderhauf  destroyed all hope for Winterthur. First, with less than a minute left, he scored on a four yard touchdown pass from Evans and then, after Calanda recovered the onside kick, he scored again from 14 yards out giving the Broncos an insurmountable 35-0 lead.

Fellberius added a third quarter touchdown and then Evans rounded out the scoring for Calanda with a final touchdown. Claiborne threw to Stocker and then carried the final touchdown for the Warriors in himself.

The Calanda defense, led by Will Hobbs who had 12 tackles, played excellent football and did not allow a touchdown until the fourth quarter.

The Broncos move on to face the Basel Gladiators in Swiss Bowl XXXII, Saturday, July 8. Basel defeated the defending champion Bern Grizzlies 14-7 in the other semifinal.
