Central American Championships: Honduras and Guatemala clash in Gold Medal Final

Honduras and Guatemala will contest the gold medal game at the IFAF Central Americas Championships at the Saaif Complex in San Antonio in El Salvador this Sunday, July 27 (kickoff 3pm CST).

Honduras beat hosts El Salvador 16-0 on Thursday in the group stages to sweep the table with a 3-0 record, having beaten Guatemala and Nicaragua on home soil back in April. Guatemala (2-1) qualified with a 14-6 win over Nicaragua in a winner takes all final group game. Nicaragua (1-2) now faces El Salvador (0-3) for the bronze medal.

When the medal contenders teams met three months ago, Honduras edged Guatemala 8-6, while Nicaragua put 38 unanswered points past El Salvador.

On Thursday, Honduras quarterback Luis Mario Solis Sarmiento threw two second half touchdowns in the win over El Salvador. His third quarter toss to tight end Manuel Alejandro Estrada Lopez broke the deadlock and Percy Manuel Duran Rubio added a two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead. In the fourth quarter, Solis Sarmiento found Estrada Lopez again in the end zone and Junior Alexander Flores Andino tagged on the two points.

In the other deciding game, Molineros’ touchdown and an extra point gave Guatemala  7-0 lead in the second quarter before wide receiver Omar Antonio Gutierrez Lopez’s score reduced the deficit to one point before halftime. Guatemala claimed the game’s decisive touchdown and advanced to Sunday’s final when Davila scored and the uprights were again split for the 14-6 win.
