CFL Preseason Recap: Stampeders dominate Elks in commanding tune-up

The Calgary Stampeders overwhelmed the Edmonton Elks 31-4 at McMahon Stadium this past weekend, showcasing their starters’ readiness while handing their provincial rivals a humbling preseason defeat.

Stampeders’ starters set early tone
Calgary’s first-team offense wasted no time, with quarterback Phillip Walker Jr. (138 passing yards, 1 TD) connecting with receiver Daylen Baldwin for an early score. Running back Logan Bonner added two rushing touchdowns, and kicker Rene Paredes drilled three field goals—including a 52-yarder—to build a 21-1 halftime lead. The defense stifled Edmonton’s attack, allowing only a 40-yard Vincent Blanchard field goal.

Penalty concerns temper Calgary’s momentum
Despite the lopsided score, head coach Dave Dickenson criticized his team’s discipline: “We took dumb, selfish penalties… over-aggression we need to clean up.” Frequent infractions stalled drives but couldn’t overshadow the Stampeders’ offensive efficiency.

Elks search for positives after sluggish debut
Edmonton struggled in their preseason opener, with head coach Mark Kilam admitting, “It was a wake-up call for preparation and physicality.” Late-game flashes from backups offered hope, but the Elks’ starters were outgained 298-121 in total yards.

Eegular season prep enters final phase
With the win, the Stampeders concluded preseason action and open their campaign June 7 against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The Elks, meanwhile, host the BC Lions on May 30 for their final tune-up before the CFL regular season kicks off June 5.
