The Mexico City Condors (4-0) defeated the Saltillo Dinos (3-1) 26-20 Sunday in Saltillo, Mexico to remain the only unbeaten team in Mexico’s Liga de Futbol Americano.
The Condors did not make it easy on themselves almost squandering a three-touchdown lead after jumping in front of the Dinos 19-0 in the second quarter.
Condors quarterback Diego Pérez Arvizu threw four touchdown passes with Sebastián Olvera , Josué Martínez, Luis Martínez and Aaron Mendoza all catching a scoring pass each.
For Saltillo, quarterback Roberto Vega threw a touchdown pass to running back Omar Cojólum and ran two in himself.
Pérez Arvizu opened the scoring late in the first quarter finding Olvera in the end zone from 12 yards out.
On the Condors next possession, early in the second quarter, Pérez Arvizu drove his team down to the Dinos seven yard line and connected with Josué Martínez who snuck into the end zone increasing the lead to 13-0.
The Mexico City quarterback had found a rhythm and with two minutes left in the first half from the Dinos 30 yard line hit a streaking Luis Martínez in the end zone with the receiver making the most improbable catch in traffic while getting pummeled to the ground.
Vega finally responded with 30 seconds left in the first half hitting Cojólum on a swing pass from the five yard line, reducing the lead to 19-6.
The Condors came out in the third quarter and immediately set the tone, with Pérez Arvizu driving them down to the 15 yard line and tossing to Mendoza in the end zone to restore the three touchdown lead, 26-6.
That was when things started to come apart for the Condors pivot as first he was picked off by Alcides Benítez at midfield but the defensive back fumbled the ball back to the Condors. Then, on the next play, Pérez Arvizu threw the ball into the arms of Benítez again. This time he held onto the ball.
Vega made him pay, driving the Dinos down to the two yard line and then punching the ball in himself to reduce the lead to 26-13.
Now it was the Dinos who were on a roll and midway through the fourth quarter, Vega found the end zone again from one yard out and the lead was now only 26-20 with plenty of time left.
Mexico City came out with a new quarterback, Yair Márquez to finish the last six minutes of the game and the defense rode out the storm, leaving the Condors as the only undefeated team in the LFA,
