Copenhagen Towers capture 7th Danish title, down Søllerød Gold Diggers to win Mermaid Bowl XXIX

The Copenhagen Towers defeated the Søllerød  Gold Diggers 20-7 in a steady downpour Saturday to win their record seventh Danish title in Mermaid Bowl XXIX at Slagelse, Denmark.

This was the Towers first title since 2014 and the first time they had faced the Gold Diggers in the championship game.

The Towers took charge early, scoring on their first possession as running back Michel Konate found a crease and raced 46 yards to the end zone to give Copenhagen a 7-0 lead.

While the Gold Diggers defense and the heavy rain managed to keep the potent Copenhagen offense in check, a special teams miscue cost them dearly. Towers defensive back Sverri Finsson recovered a blocked punt in the end zone giving Copenhagen a 14-0 going into the break.

The Towers controlled the third quarter as quarterback Patrick Hargett found running back Dayton Winn for a 55 yard touchdown pass and Copenhagen extended their lead to 20-0.

Despite a second half surge by Søllerød  which included a 44 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Morten Forsbøl to Søren Bakbøl to narrow the lead to 20-7, the game was never in doubt.

The rain played havoc on both offenses and with defenses ruling the day, so it was nor surprise that Towers linebacker Magnus Alexander Bitsch was named MVP of the game.
