Costa Rica: Men’s 1st Division 2022 Championship Season set to start
After a two-year hiatus from a formal calendar, six teams from Costa Rica will take to the field for the Men’s 1st Division 2022 Championship season, Sunday, March 6.
A collective of players created the Union Pro-Football CR group to organize the 2022 Championship consisting of a 7-week game calendar with Playoffs on May 8th and the Final on May 22nd.
Week 1 will commence with the opening game between the Toros facing the Alajuela Pumas at 2:00 PM and the Leones vs the Saints at 5:30 PM. Both of the games will be played at the Plaza de Deportes Llorente de Flores in Heredia.
The Leones pride themselves for being a homegrown Tico team with all players being nationals whereas the Toros and several other teams over the years have accepted a few foreign nationals on their teams. It was with great pride that the Leones, a new team at the time won the 2019 Championship.

Toros are the only original team since the sport was established in 2009 competing in the 2022 Championship. A few other original teams still remain in the sport however they are not participating in the Championship this year.

Recently, the Toros dedicated the 2022 Championship season to their first coach and former Costa Rica Federation president (2011-2015), Paolo Vincenzi who passed away last year from cancer.
Today we have our last training session before the start of the 2022 championship. It is our first tournament without coach Paolo in this world, but we know that Toros and many people associated with American football in Costa Rica will remember him for a long time, which is why we want to dedicate this 2022 championship to our first coach Paolo Vincenci and our players will wear the coach’s victory fist on each helmet. See you always coach, we know that wherever you are you will encourage us! – Toros Team
