The undefeated Dresden Monarchs have fortified their defense ahead of the ERIMA German Football League’s second half, signing Spanish defensive back Brayan Carbonell and Austrian linebacker Sebastian Huber to maintain their championship momentum.
Defensive coordinator outlines strategic vision
Defense Coordinator Martin Schmidt emphasized depth and versatility as key reasons for the signings: “Brayan and Sebastian bring high motivation and skill to achieve our ambitious goals.” Both players are expected to bolster a unit critical to Dresden’s 2025 title aspirations.
Brayan Carbonell transitions from ELF to GFL
The 20-year-old Carbonell, a product of Spain’s Hospitalet Pioners and Barcelona Dragons (ELF), joins Dresden after a standout 2023 ELF season leading in interceptions and pass breakups. The Spanish international cited former Dragons teammates José Ariza Paredes and Aaron David Perez, now with Dresden, as influencers: “Their praise for the club’s culture and facilities convinced me this is where I can grow and win.”
Sebastian Huber adds championship pedigree
Huber, 24, brings versatility honed with Austria’s Salzburg Ducks, the Kirchdorf Wildcats (GFL), and ELF champions Vienna Vikings (2022). The linebacker, who spent 2023 with Raiders Tirol, praised Dresden’s ambition: “Their goals mirror what we achieved in Vienna. Teammate Rudi Frey’s enthusiasm for the club solidified my decision.”
Strategic fits for Monarchs’ system
Carbonell’s coverage skills and Huber’s positional flexibility address Dresden’s need for defensive adaptability. Carbonell’s familiarity with ELF schemes and Huber’s experience in high-pressure environments align with Schmidt’s emphasis on “variable depth.”
The Monarchs, yet to lose in 2024, aim to leverage these additions as they pursue their first GFL title since 2022.
