Dresden Monarchs survive Wilddogs rally to advance to semi-finals

The Dresden Monarchs are headed back to the German Football League semifinals after surviving a massive second-half scare from the Pforzheim Wilddogs, securing a hard-fought 41-22 (7-0/17-0/7-14/10-8) victory in front of 4,290 fans at Heinz-Field.

A dominant first half display
From the opening kickoff, the Monarchs looked every bit the favorite, capitalizing on a nervous start from the newly-promoted Wilddogs. The offense moved efficiently, with quarterback Justin Miller connecting with Finnish receiver Joel Särkelä for the game’s first touchdown. Kicker Florian Finke added the extra point and later nailed a nearly 40-yard field goal to extend the lead. Miller continued his strong performance, finding both Särkelä and Tofunmi Lala for additional scores, building a commanding 24-0 halftime lead that, while impressive, belied some emerging vulnerabilities on both sides of the ball.

Pforzheim’s furious comeback
The game appeared to be a foregone conclusion when Dresden stretched the lead to 31-0 shortly after halftime. However, the Wilddogs mounted a stunning and relentless rally. Led by playmaker Drequan Harris, Pforzheim expertly exploited gaps in the Monarchs’ defense, scoring 22 unanswered points. A touchdown pass to Luca Hirschberger, a scoring connection from Alec Tatum to Harris, and a short rushing touchdown by Harris, followed by a successful two-point conversion, suddenly turned the contest into a tense, one-possession game at 31-22.

Closing the door on an upset
With momentum entirely against them, the Monarchs faced a critical moment when a fumble on the ensuing kickoff by Tofunmi Lala nearly gifted Pforzheim prime field position but Lala managed to snag the ball. The offense finally responded, with Miller engineering a crucial drive that was capped by a spectacular touchdown reception by wide receiver Tyler Hudson, who broke away from defenders for a 56 yard score. Finke later sealed the victory with a 42-yard field goal, finally extinguishing the Wilddogs’ hopes.

The Dresden Monarchs advance to the semi-finals, their ultimate goal of reaching the GFL Bowl in October firmly intact, but with a stark reminder of the level of focus required to achieve it. They await the winner of the game between the Razorbacks Ravensburg and the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes.
