Salzburg Ducks hold off Enthroners in defensive Austrian Football League season opener

The Salzburg Ducks (1-0) opened their Austrian Football League campaign with a hard-fought 16–13 victory over the Fehervar Enthroners (0-1), who made their AFL debut after moving from the European League of Football in a game defined by defensive stands and critical special teams plays.

Ducks build early lead
Salzburg controlled the first half, jumping to a 13–0 lead behind a rushing touchdown from quarterback Gavin Sukup and a 20-yard touchdown pass from Sukup to receiver Pavo Lukac. The Ducks’ defense stifled the Enthroners’ attack, setting the tone for a physical, low-scoring affair.

Special teams swing momentum
After Fehervar scored a touchdown to open the second half, Salzburg’s Jamario Howard immediately responded with a spectacular kickoff return to the 5-yard line, setting up a crucial field goal by Max Reuther. Though the Enthroners added another late touchdown, the Ducks’ defense held firm in the final moments to secure the win.

Coaches reflect on narrow result
Salzburg head coach Joe Ashfield acknowledged the win while emphasizing room for improvement, stating,

“We are happy, but not satisfied. We made too many mistakes.”

Fehervar’s Michael Wood critiqued his team’s slow start but praised their resilience:

“We were really bad in the first half… but I’m very proud of how we fought back”.

The narrow margin sets up an intriguing season for both squads.
