Egypt first African country to suspend football

The Egyptian Federation of American Football, EFAF, has announced a suspension of all football until further notice.

“In light of the uncertainty we currently face in regads to the outbreak of COVID-19 (coronavirus), all American Football acitivities will be temporarily suspended until further notice. This includes but is not limited to games, practices, clinics, camps and academies.

Our main priority is doing all we can in order to maintain the safety and well being of our players, coaches, fans and staff. We will continue to communicate should any circumstances change or information become available to support the situation.”

The Egyptian National Football League had reached the midpoint of the 2020 season.

Current situation in Egypt

Egypt reported on Monday 40 new coronavirus cases raising the total number of cases to 166, in addition to two new deaths, raising the death toll to four people, according to the Egyptian Ministry of Health.

Thirty-five of the new cases were Egyptian nationals, while five where foreigners. Eight of the forty had returned on Umrah pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia and the rest had come into contact with infected people detected and reported earlier. Egypt is also halting all air traffic from its airports starting Thursday, March 19 until March 31 to prevent the spread of the coronavirus,
