ELF: Frankfurt Galaxy bring back Universe and DI QB Steve Cluley

The Frankfurt Galaxy of the European League of Football have brought back a familiar face in quarterback Steve Cluley. The former Frankfurt Universe quarterback returns to the German financial capital as he replaces injured quarterback Jakeb Sullivan for a stretch of three to four games while Sullivan recovers from a lower-body injury.

The 28-year-old, 6’3″, 215 pound Cluley returns to Frankfurt after a four-year absence as the former DI quarterback suited up for the Frankfurt Universe in the German Football League in both 2018 and 2019.

In his final year in Germany, Cluley led the Universe to the German Bowl where they fell just short to the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns. That season, Cluley threw for 4,101 yards and 42 touchdowns while adding four more scores on the ground.

Since then, Cluley has played some indoor football for the San Diego Strike Force in 2022 as well as playing pro Rugby for the American Raptors, while working in the budding field of Name, Image, and Likeness.

The New Jersey native was a three year starter at William & Mary (NCAA Div. I) in Williamsburg, Virginia where he was one of the most productive quarterbacks in school history. He finished his career in 2016 with 35 consecutive starts and ranked among the program’s top-10 in seven categories – sixth in passing yards (6,864), sixth in total offense (7,128), fourth in passing attempts (959), third in passing completions (577), tied for fifth in completion percentage (60.2), eighth in passing touchdowns (39) and seventh in 200-yard passing performances (16).

Cluley’s best season with the Tribe came during his junior campaign when he earned All-Colonial Athletic Association honors after completing 222 of 354 passes for 2,768 yards with 16 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. His 212.9 passing yards per game ranked second in the CAA, while his completion percentage (.627) led the conference and ranked 20th nationally.

Cluley owns the single-game school record for completion percentage (91.3), which he set against Towson in 2015 when he completed 21 of 23 passes. Additionally, he posted a pair of impressive stretches of 176 and 138 consecutive passing attempts without an interception. He attended New York Giants mini camp in 2018.
