Explosive offence powers Alouettes over Blue Bombers

MONTREAL — It was an offensive show at Percival Molson Stadium as the Montreal Alouettes’ offence couldn’t be stopped as they took down the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 37-10 on Saturday night.

With the win, the Alouettes clinched first place in the East Division, giving Montreal a bye and home-field advantage for the Eastern Final.

The game started with a bang, as the teams traded scores in the opening quarter. It was the home team striking first, however, as rookie Rohan Jones’ first career touchdown capped off a five-play drive as the Alouettes took the early lead.

Dru Brown and the Bombers responded right away, as Brown found Ontaria Wilson for a 52-yard strike to even the score just over a minute later. After Winnipeg’s explosive play, Montreal responded with a methodical 10-play drive to take back the lead, before the Blue Bombers answered with a field goal to conclude the back-and-forth frame.

The points continued to come in the second quarter, as the Alouettes responded with a triple of their own to extend their lead back up to a touchdown’s worth. It was the defences standing tall for virtually the rest of the second quarter, then Tyson Philpot struck and made history.

A dazzling deep shot from Davis Alexander to Philpot marked the wideout’s 113th catch, setting an Alouettes’ single-season record, while also setting a new record for the most receiving yards by a Canadian in a single season at 1,663. That history-making catch late in the frame set up a Caleb Evans touchdown as the Als took a two-score lead heading into the break.

The Alouettes continued their onslaught to start the third quarter as another marvellous drive led by Alexander, capped off by Evans’ second touchdown sneak, extended Montreal’s lead even further.

That score held until the final frame, before Jose Maltos Diaz knocked in his second and third triple of the game as Montreal cruised to victory.
