Fehérvár Enthroners name Michael Wood as new HC for 2026 Austrian Football League season

The Fehérvár Enthroners have made a major leadership move, announcing the hiring of veteran coach Michael Wood as their new head coach for the 2026 AFL season, a critical signing for a franchise looking to rebound from a winless 0-12 campaign in 2025.

Wood expressed excitement about the opportunity:

“I am excited to join Fehervar Enthroners. Getting the opportunity to play in the AFL (Austrian Football League) and compete at the highest level is a big challenge for our organization. I am looking forward to leading Enthroner Nation into the 2026 season.”

A well-traveled coaching veteran

The 62-year-old Wood brings over three decades of coaching experience across Europe and the United States to Fehérvár. A former Ohio State Buckeyes defensive back who played in four bowl games, including the Rose Bowl, Wood transitioned smoothly into coaching after a playing career that included two seasons with Germany’s Kempten Comets. His extensive resume includes stops at American colleges like Ithaca CollegeColumbia University, and Chapman University, as well as numerous European clubs.

Proven success in Europe

Wood is no stranger to European football, having built a reputation as a successful and adaptable leader. From 2018 to 2021, he served as head coach of the Milano Seamen in Italy, compiling an impressive 28–4 overall record and leading the team to two Italian titles and a runner-up finish in the Italian Bowl. More recently, he served as defensive coordinator for the Helsinki Roosters in 2024, guiding them to a league-leading defensive performance, allowing just 13 points per game through the playoffs. His most recent role was as defensive coordinator for the Helvetic Mercenaries in the European League of Football for part of the 2025 season.

The monumental rebuild ahead

This hiring is about more than just adding an experienced leader; it’s about launching a total cultural reset. The Enthroners are coming off a brutally difficult 0-12 season in 2025, a year defined by struggles on both sides of the ball. Wood’s primary task will be to instill a new identity and a winning mentality into a team in desperate need of a fresh start. His proven track record of building strong, disciplined defensive units will be crucial for a squad that was routinely overmatched.

The right man for the job?

Wood’s extensive resume suggests he’s uniquely prepared for this challenge. He has a history of improving teams quickly, as seen with his mid-season work with the Barcelona Dragons in 2021 and his transformative impact on the Helsinki Roosters’ defense. His experience coaching in multiple countries means he understands how to adapt his system to different leagues and rosters. For a Fehérvár team looking to establish a new foundation after a winless year, Wood’s blend of old-school discipline and modern defensive strategy could be the perfect catalyst for a turnaround. The entire organization will be counting on his three decades of experience to guide them out of the cellar and build a competitive team for the future.
