The Fédération Française de Football Américain (FFFA) has 191 clubs as of 2012. It also oversees the development of the flag football and cheerleading, which bring the total number of participants in FFFA related activities to over 22,000.
The federation was founded May 6, 1985, and was based on the first French Football Federation founded April 15, 1983. Between 1981 and 1983, American Football was run by a National Committee for the development of football in France. This committee became the FFFA in 1983.
The country is divided into five inter-regional areas:
North and Centre:, Ile-de-France, Nord-Pas de Calais, Picardy
Southeast: Auvergne, Languedoc-Roussillon, Rhône-Alpes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur;
Southwest: Aquitaine, Midi Pyrenees, Limousin, Poitou-Charentes;
Northwest: Haute Normandie, Normandy, Brittany, Pays de la Loire;
Northeast: Alsace, Lorraine, Franche-Comté, Champagne-Ardenne, Burgundy.
