The Wasa Royals (2-5) will try to snap a five-game losing streak Saturday when they host the defending champion Porvoon Butchers (5-2) at Kaarle Field in a Finnish Maple League matchup featuring a Royals team looking for a turnaround and a Butchers squad still chasing home-field advantage in the playoffs.
Jalloh returns to Vaasa
The biggest development for Wasa is the return of Alpha Jalloh.
Jalloh began the season in Sweden before joining the Northern Lights in Division I and now returns to a Royals team that could use another playmaker.
Wide receiver Andrew McElroy is also listed for Saturday, giving Wasa options on both sides of the ball.
Quarterback Shazzon Mumphrey leads an offense that could lean heavily on the passing game. With the team’s regular running backs unavailable, defensive back Karim Limam is listed as the starting ball carrier.
Royals defense faces another test
Despite the five-game skid, the Royals defense has helped keep the team competitive in several games.
That unit will need another strong performance against a Porvoon team that has recovered from its earlier setbacks and remains in the hunt for a home playoff game.
The Butchers are expected to travel with 31 available players, while receiver Luukas Eerola is listed as uncertain. Phung Nguyen has returned from the Kerava Bulldogs, adding another receiving option.
Viuha chasing interception record
There will also be some individual history at stake for the Butchers defense.
Kaapo Viuha has eight interceptions through seven games and has three games remaining to chase Zach Wright’s single-season record.
Mumphrey has only completed 34 percent of his passes, giving the Porvoon secondary opportunities if the Royals are forced to throw frequently.
Gourdine closes in on sack mark
Dal’Mont Gourdine has another Maple League record within reach.
The Butchers defensive lineman has 12.5 sacks and needs two more to equal the single-season record of 14.5 held by former Seinäjoki Crocodiles defender Charles Akanno.
For Wasa, ending its losing streak would be a major boost late in a difficult season. For Porvoo, there is little room for a slip with playoff positioning still at stake.
That gives Saturday’s matchup plenty riding on it at Kaarle Field.
