The Kuopio Steelers (2-2) return home to face the East City Giants (1-3) on Saturday, looking to avenge their season-opening loss while strengthening their position in the Finnish Maple League standings.
That opening-week defeat has lingered for the Steelers, making this rematch an opportunity to even the season series. Meanwhile, the Giants are searching for just their second victory after showing steady improvement despite their record.
Steelers seek bounce-back win
The Steelers reached the halfway point of the regular season with an even 2-2 record after entering the year as one of the league favorites. Although they have experienced some ups and downs, playing at home gives Kuopio a chance to erase the memory of that opening-game loss.
The Steelers will again be without linebacker Christopher Cox and wide receiver Daniel Rubinstein, two important contributors on both sides of the ball. Even so, head coach Pekka Utriainen has enough depth to field a team capable of challenging for another victory.
A win would not only erase the memory of the opening-week loss but also move the Steelers a step closer to the top half of the Maple League standings.
Giants adjusting at quarterback
The biggest storyline for the Giants is the absence of quarterback K’Hari Lane, who was injured late in last week’s game against the Roosters. Lane has been one of the league’s most productive quarterbacks, throwing for 1,114 yards while helping establish one of the Maple League’s most dangerous passing attacks.
With Lane sidelined, recently acquired Ukrainian quarterback Volodymyr Hrynkiv is expected to make his debut after arriving from the Znojmo Knights in the Czech Republic.
The Giants will continue to rely on receivers Ronny Lindroos and Austin Brock, who have been among the league’s top playmakers during the first half of the season.
Important rematch
Ironically, neither Lane nor Rubinstein—two players who played key roles when these teams met in the season opener—will be available for the rematch.
That means new faces will have to step up as the Steelers try to gain revenge on their home field, while the Giants look to prove they can overcome adversity and complete a season sweep of one of the Maple League’s preseason favorites.
