France: Thonon Black Panthers clinch Northern Conference crown in thrilling win over Asnieres Molosses

The Thonon Black Panthers (9-1) edged the Asnieres Molosses (7-3) 24-20 at Stade Joseph Moynat this past weekend, clinching the Northern Conference top seed in a tense D1 Elite clash marked by defensive grit and late-game heroics.

Defensive grind sets tense tone
Both teams opened with stifling defensive schemes, limiting scoring chances in a first quarter defined by punts and field position battles. Kicker Adel Bafdile broke the deadlock late in the quarter with a field goal, rewarding Thonon’s territorial dominance. The Black Panthers extended their lead early in the second quarter via RB Odell Turnbull’s 8-yard TD rush, but the Molosses answered before halftime with Sylvain Segla’s 4-yard score, narrowing the gap to 10-6.

Turnbull, Bafdile spark Panthers’ surge
Asnieres seized momentum after halftime, with RB Kevin Momnohin capping a 12-play drive with a 1-yard plunge to take a 13-10 lead. Thonon retaliated instantly as Bafdile returned the ensuing kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown, electrifying the home crowd. Undeterred, Molosses QB Brody Hahn orchestrated a 75-yard drive, firing a 15-yard TD pass to reclaim a 20-17 advantage late in the third quarter.

Late-game poise seals playoff bye
Facing their first deficit since Week 1, the Black Panthers leaned on Turnbull, who powered through tackles for a TD—his second score—to reclaim the lead at 24-20. Thonon’s defense then stiffened, forcing a three-and-out before grinding out a 7-minute, game-closing drive.
