French Casque de Diamant: Thonon Black Panthers rally from 17 down to capture fourth straight title

The Thonon Black Panthers completed one of the greatest comebacks in French Casque de Diamant history, erasing a 17-point second-half deficit to stun the Cannes Iron Mask 49-46 and claim their fourth consecutive French championship. In a championship game packed with momentum swings, explosive plays and late drama, Thonon scored 28 unanswered points in the fourth quarter before holding off one final Cannes rally to secure the 30th Casque de Diamant.

Defenses set the tone

The game opened as a defensive battle, with neither offense finding the end zone during the first quarter. Cannes stopped Thonon on a fourth-and-short attempt, while both defenses lived up to their reputation as the league’s stingiest units.

The scoring finally broke open in the second quarter. Conor Miller connected with Julien Vast for the game’s first touchdown before Mateo Renteria answered with a long touchdown run behind a key block from Lucas Davoine. Miller and D’Vontae Key hooked up for another score, but Pierre-Yves Dayres hauled in a touchdown reception from Renteria to tie the game again. A late field goal by Nathan Aubert gave Cannes a 17-14 halftime lead.

Iron Mask takes control

The Iron Mask looked poised to lift the trophy after halftime. Miller found Nicolas Marin for another touchdown before Key added his second touchdown reception of the afternoon. When Jules Beltra intercepted a deflected Renteria pass and Yanis Polin broke free for a long touchdown run, Cannes suddenly held a commanding 38-21 advantage late in the third quarter.

Champions answer

The defending champions refused to fold. Renteria sparked the comeback with his second rushing touchdown before finding Aymeric Guillemaud to pull Thonon within three.

Momentum completely shifted after Kevin Fortes intercepted Loris Savalle, giving the Black Panthers another opportunity. Renteria capitalized by finding Dayres for his third touchdown of the game, giving Thonon its first lead. Moments later, another interception by Stéphane Fortes set up a touchdown pass to Steven Monteiro, extending the lead to 49-38.

Polin scored his second touchdown for Cannes, and Nicolas Marin added the two-point conversion to trim the margin to three, but the Black Panthers ran out the remaining time to complete an unforgettable comeback.

Renteria finished with two rushing touchdowns and three touchdown passes, while Dayres caught three scoring passes. Miller threw touchdown passes to Julien Vast, D’Vontae Key and Nicolas Marin, while Key finished with two touchdown receptions in a heartbreaking defeat for Cannes.
