Cornerback boosts defense of newly promoted German Football League 2 champs.
It seems that the Frankfurt Galaxy do not intend to enter the GFL, the top American football league in Germany, quietly. The team’s plan is to have an immediate impact and they have taken the first step, reinforcing an already tough defense. The “Men in Purple” have started by signing one of the top corners in Germany, Nathaniel Morris, away from the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns.
Morris, a 24 year old Boston native, brings plenty of experience from the his college and German Football League teams to Frankfurt.
“I played for the Hargrave Military Academy and then at Stonehill College, a NCAA Division 2 in the Northeast-10 Conference,” said Morris, who named All-Conference in his last two college seasons. After graduating, he also received an invitation to the National Bowl in Miami, a game amongst the top college players from lower divisions.
“On defense I was used as a cornerback and also used on punt and kick returns,” says Morris, who was active in the GFL last season with the GFL South champions and German Bowl participants Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns.”
Frankfurt’s defensive coordinator Thomas Kösling sees Morris significantly reinforcing the Galaxy.
“Last year Nate contributed significantly to the successful season of Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns and was one of their top performers. He is a very good cornerback, especially in man-to-man schemes. We are glad that we were able to convince Nate to join our program. He will be able to strengthen our defensive backfield enormously and he also knows the GFL South very well which may, since it is our first year, be to our advantage.”
Morris spoke with the Galaxy press office regarding joining the 2016 Frankfurt squad.
Why the change to the Frankfurt Galaxy?
I did not decide to change one for the other, from the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns to the Galaxy. It was more of a process … I have visited the Galaxy’s home games on bye weekends and loved the atmosphere! The fans have played a part in the decision. You are likely to be playing for the biggest and best fanbase of any team in the GFL! For me this is very important because I play this game because I love it! And the fans love this team as much as I love the sport. Those responsible for the “Men in Purple” also do whatever is necessary to advance the team and be competitive in Germany. I also wanted to thank the Galaxy that I will get this chance. We quickly agreed during the talks and I am sure that we will see a fantastic 2016 season!
So you’ve already seen a Galaxy game live?
Yes. The fans support the team in an impressive way. Together with all the trappings, which is very rare in Europe, the game was truly an amazing experience.
How can you help the team to GFL victories?
I’ll do my job! That is, I will use my skills, and help move the team move forward on and off the field. I bring good humor and optimism in every training session and in every game. We all will get better from workout to workout and from game to game. To make the “Men in Purple” better I will give everything I can contribute. We players can give the coaches confidence to use us where we can most help the team and if we all work hand in hand – and I mean not only within the team but referring also to the staff, volunteers and fans – then we can be one of the best teams in the GFL in 2016.
What do you see as biggest success of your career?
Conference champions in my third year of college! It’s been a few years, so now I would like a German Bowl win with the Galaxy!
