Guatemalan David Giron Returns To Play For Frankfurt Universe In Germany

Germany’s Frankfurt Universe may be aiming higher for the 2017 season but they have made sure one of the keys to their success so far stays. Receiver David Giron from Guatemala has re-signed with the Universe.

The 24 year old, 5’11”, 185 lb native of Guatemala City, Guatemala, finished second in Germany in 2016 with 5.6 catches per game after recording 78 receptions for 1,032 yards and 12 touchdowns in 14 games. His journey from Guatemala to high school football in Texas and college at Western Carolina University to Europe and the German Football League is an amazing story of fortitude.

American Football International sat down with David to ask about his future with Frankfurt and his past too.

American Football International: What made you decide to return for a third season in Frankfurt?

David Giron: I am back in Frankfurt because they have treated me really well my past two seasons and last year we fell short in the playoffs. I would love to finish what I started 2 years ago with this program. The fans in Frankfurt have also been amazing and that is a big part of the reason I am staying. Coaches also have a great plan for next season and I really wanted to be part of it.

AFI: Did you have other offers?

Giron: I was in talks with other teams and got some offers but Frankfurt really did a good job to get me back and I could not say no after 2 years together. I talked to several teams but I signed back almost a month after the season was over so I did not give other teams a solid chance to make offers.

AFI: What other countries have you had a chance to visit?

Giron: It has been a great time playing in Europe and I have had the chance to visit Holland, Spain, Austria and several cities in Germany.

AFI: What do you bring to the Universe?

Giron: I just try to be the best team player to help my team win. Whatever role the team needs me to play I will do. I have been in Europe long enough and I do not need to prove anything with stats all I want to do is win with my team. I also think this will be my last year of football and I just want a shot for the German Bowl.

AFI: What are your expectations for the 2017 season?

Giron:  I think we just have to take it one game at a time and play to the best of our abilities. Now we have one extra year of experience which is very important for team chemistry. We also have a lot of great new players giving us a good depth and I cannot wait to see what this team will do on the field.

AFI: Your story is very unique. What lessons would you pass on to young football players?

Giron: Yes sometimes I look back and realize how crazy my football career has been, and now I am living in Germany and living my dream. I would just tell everyone that no dream is impossible. I mean you can see a football player from Guatemala, who played against the best of the best in the US and now plays football in Germany. It is a crazy story but with faith and hard work everything is possible.

AFI: Your favorite food from Germany?

Giron: Food in Germany is great, but I cannot lie I do enjoy eating kebabs even they are not German they are great.
