Helsinki Roosters sign German Football League’s leading rusher, Sidney Gibbs for 2026
The Helsinki Roosters, looking to improve upon their fourth-place finish in the 2025 Maple League season, have secured a massive offensive weapon, signing the top rusher in the German Football League, Sidney Gibbs, to carry the rock for their 2026 campaign.
A proven workhorse for the Roosters
The Roosters didn’t just get an American import; they got the most productive running back from one of Europe’s top leagues. Gibbs is coming off a dominant 2025 season with the Straubing Spiders in the GFL, where he led the entire league in rushing. His stat line was excellent: 1,253 yards and 17 touchdowns on 150 carries, proving he can be a true bell-cow back and a nightmare for opposing defenses near the goal line.
From college legend to European star
Before tearing up Germany, Gibbs built a legendary career at Shaw University in North Carolina (NCAA Div. II). The 5’9″, 196-pound back finished his four-year career as the school’s all-time leading rusher with 3,326 yards on 605 carries. He found the end zone 30 times for the Bears, showcasing the consistent scoring punch he now brings to Finland. His college excellence was recognized with multiple All-CIAA selections.
Elevating the Helsinki ground game
This move signals a clear intent from the Helsinki Roosters to build a powerful, run-first identity. Gibbs isn’t just a backup plan; he’s a centerpiece. His proven ability to handle a heavy workload and his nose for the end zone will immediately transform the Roosters’ offense and make them a much more dangerous and balanced contender in the Maple League for 2026.
