The Tampere Saints (2-5) welcome the surging Helsinki Roosters (4-3) to Pyynikki Field Thursday night for the first of back-to-back meetings that could go a long way toward deciding the Finnish Maple League playoff picture.
The Saints return from a three-week break needing wins, while the Roosters arrive as one of the league’s hottest teams. After opening 0-3, Helsinki has ripped off four straight victories and still has its sights set on earning home-field advantage in the semifinals.
Saints return with plenty at stake
Tampere has reason to believe it can slow the Roosters. The Saints beat Helsinki for the first time in club history when the teams last met at the end of the 2025 season.
The biggest question is what the Saints will look like after such a long layoff. Running back Konsta Mäenpää is listed as uncertain, and his availability could have a major impact on an offense led by quarterback Christopher Howard.
Receiver Logan Collier remains one of Tampere’s primary threats and has also contributed defensively. The Saints have added Arthur True from the Lohja Crusaders through their farm agreement, giving the defense another option alongside linebacker Chase McCoy.
Joona Tuominen, however, will not be available after leaving for the United States.
Roosters riding four-game winning streak
Few teams have changed their season as dramatically as the Roosters. Their four-game winning streak has taken them from the bottom of the standings into playoff position, with last week’s 47-7 victory over the Wasa Royals continuing that turnaround.
Ambro Urjansson completed 24 of 31 passes for 253 yards and four touchdowns in that win, all four scores going to Corintheus Edmonds.
New running back Freddie Brock also made an immediate impression in his Maple League debut and now gives Helsinki another option on the ground alongside Lassi Pajarinen.
Gwinner adds another option
One of Thursday’s most interesting additions is Brandon Gwinner, who joins the Roosters after helping the Bulldogs win the Division I championship. With Urjansson and Rasmus Laalo already at quarterback, how Helsinki uses Gwinner will be worth watching.
The Roosters will be shorthanded defensively, with Christer Berg, Joni Kotro and Taavi Aronpää unavailable.
Still, Helsinki enters Pyynikki with momentum and plenty to play for. A fifth straight victory would keep the defending champions moving toward the postseason and preserve their hopes of securing a home semifinal.
