Team Hungary in their traditional red, white and green uniforms, overwhelmed Slovakia 42-3 in an international friendly in Budapest, Hungary this past weekend.

This was the second win in five games for the Hungarians and the first in Budapest. Hungary notched his first historic win a year ago beating Poland 23-22.

Quarterback Márk Bencsics threw for 179 yards and three touchdowns and completed 61% of his passes for the win. Backup quarterback Vasyl Yordan (9/11, 100 yards 2 TDs) and receiver Máté Gecser (7 catches, 66 yards, 2 TDs) were were also key in the win. The game started slowly, with neither team being able to move the ball in the first quarter. But that changed in the second quarter as Hungary’s passing game and defense started to improve. Bencsics threw a 22 yard touchdown pass to receiver Gecser to take the lead. The visitors tried to come back immediately, but, Hungarian defensive back Ádám Magyar intercepted a Patrik Trischitz pass and took the ball all the way to the end zone for a touchdown. Along with the passing game, the home team’s running game started to develop quickly with Richárd Roják carrying the ball 12 times for 78 yards.

Ádám Elek’s touchdown reception gave Hungary a three possession lead at the break: 21-0.

The Slovakians tried to make some adjustments at halftime, but they could not slow down the Hungarian onslaught. Gecser’s second touchdown reception in the third quarter seemed to settle the game. In the last quarter, the visiting team got its first points on the board with Peter Brauner’s field goal.

However, Hungary responded with Vasyl Yordan replacing Bencsics at quarterback. Yordan threw two touchdown passes, the first to Márton Czirók and the second to Márton Mészáros making it an easy win for the red, white, and green squad.
