Japan: Obic stays perfect as X League Premier playoff race tightens behind Seagulls
The Obic Seagulls (6-0) remain the only unbeaten team in the Japanese X League Premier, but an unusual Round 6 weekend saw the Fujitsu Frontiers, Panasonic Impulse and IBM Big Blue strengthen their positions while Obic picked up a victory without ever taking the field.
The Frontiers (5-1) survived the SEKISUI Challengers 20-17, Panasonic (4-2) pulled away from the Elecom Kobe Finies 36-15 and IBM (3-2) beat the All Mitsubishi Lions 24-10.
The scheduled game between Obic and Fujifilm Ebina Minerva AFC never happened. Minerva refused to play amid an escalating dispute over Obic’s violations of the league’s professional-player rules, and the X League awarded the Seagulls a 1-0 forfeit victory.
Frontiers survive a scare
The Frontiers found themselves in a fight against winless SEKISUI (0-5-1), trailing 17-10 after Garrett Safron connected with Sorato Ohtani for a 24-yard touchdown in the third quarter.
Koji Nosho’s 19-yard field goal pulled Fujitsu within four before Koki Miyake broke loose for 42 yards in the fourth quarter. Tsubasa Takagi eventually found Daniel Barker for a 13-yard touchdown that put the Frontiers back in front.
Takagi completed 15 of 24 passes for 155 yards and a touchdown, while Miyake ran for 62 yards and a score. Fujitsu’s defense recovered a late fumble and the offense burned away the final 5:44 to secure its fifth win.
Panasonic keeps rolling
After opening the season 0-2, the Impulse have ripped off four straight victories and climbed to third.
Akio Yokoi kept Panasonic moving early against the Finies, drilling three first-quarter field goals as the Impulse built a 9-0 lead without reaching the end zone.
Victor Mitchell changed that in the second quarter, finishing a 72-yard drive with a seven-yard touchdown run. He struck again from six yards in the fourth and finished with 72 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries.
Yokoi was perfect on all five of his field-goal attempts, connecting from 22, 42, 24, 39 and 44 yards as Panasonic won 36-15.
The loss was the third straight for Elecom Kobe (3-3) after a 3-0 start.
Wentland leads IBM defense
The Big Blue used defense and special teams to take down All Mitsubishi (2-3).
Jiro Fukuda intercepted DeMarcus Levon Irons Jr. after the Lions recovered an opening onside kick, and IBM quickly turned the takeaway into a Minje Akimoto touchdown.
Yuki Masamoto later hit Reece Horn for a 43-yard score before a blocked punt returned for a touchdown helped send IBM into halftime leading 21-3.
Linebacker AJ Wentland led everyone with eight total tackles, including a sack and two tackles for loss, while Yoshito Fujita intercepted Irons twice and earned game MVP honors.
Horn finished with eight catches for 187 yards and a touchdown as the Big Blue moved above .500.
Obic-Minerva dispute boils over
The weekend’s biggest story, however, came from the game that wasn’t played.
Fujifilm Ebina Minerva (2-3) refused to face Obic after a dispute surrounding the Seagulls’ violations of regulations governing professional-player contracts.
Minerva had joined six other X Premier clubs in seeking clarification from the league and Obic over the violations, including questions surrounding player eligibility and compliance with roster rules. Minerva said those concerns had not been sufficiently resolved and ultimately declined to play.
The X League ruled that disciplinary issues involving Obic and a member team’s obligation to play scheduled games were separate matters. It canceled the game and awarded the Seagulls a 1-0 victory under its forfeit rule.
The league is now reviewing Minerva’s decision, including whether additional disciplinary action is warranted.
Race for six playoff spots heats up
Behind 6-0 Obic and 5-1 Fujitsu, the middle of the standings remains crowded.
Panasonic’s four-game winning streak has carried the defending champions from 0-2 to 4-2, while IBM sits fourth at 3-2. Elecom Kobe remains fifth at 3-3 despite its three-game slide.
The idle Nojima Sagamihara Rise (2-2-1) currently hold sixth, followed by All Mitsubishi (2-3) and Fujifilm Ebina Minerva (2-3). The Tokyo Gas Creators (1-3), SEKISUI (0-5-1) and OrientalBio Silver Star (0-4) round out the standings.
With six teams advancing to the postseason, Obic and Fujitsu have separated themselves at the top. Behind them, almost nothing is settled.
And after a Round 6 that included three games, one forfeit and a growing dispute away from the field, the battle for those remaining playoff places has become even more complicated.
