The unbeaten Obic Seagulls (6-0) return to the field Sunday after an unusual break when they face the Sekisui Challengers (0-5-1) at Tsurumi Ryokuchi Stadium in X League Premier action.
Obic’s record includes a forfeit victory over Fujifilm, and postponements have left the Seagulls without an actual game for more than a month. That makes regaining their rhythm perhaps the biggest question surrounding the league leaders.
Holley leads potent Obic attack
The last time Obic actually took the field, Pierce Holley threw for 363 yards and two touchdowns in a dramatic 24-21 victory over the Elecom Kobe Finies.
Yuki Sakuma caught seven passes for 157 yards, including Holley’s game-winning 39-yard touchdown with 59 seconds remaining.
The Seagulls enter Sunday with the league’s second-highest average passing output, while their defense ranks first against both the run and pass.
Sekisui showing signs of life
The record does not tell the whole story for the Challengers.
In their latest outing, Sekisui pushed the Fujitsu Frontiers before falling 20-17. Garrett Safron completed 27 of 35 passes for 318 yards and two touchdowns without an interception as the Challengers outgained Fujitsu 348-299.
Boogie Knight caught 10 passes for 123 yards, while Sorato Ohtani added five receptions for 73 yards and a touchdown.
Passing games take center stage
Sekisui ranks third in the league at 207 passing yards per game and leads the X League with a 50% third-down conversion rate. Its pass defense also ranks third, allowing 152.3 yards per game.
That gives the Challengers something to work with against a heavily favored opponent.
The question is whether they can slow Holley and the Seagulls long enough to turn Obic’s long layoff into an opportunity.
